点评:If you live in Los Angeles and want to experience a side of California that still feels genuinely wild, put Ojai Mountain Estate on your list.
I'm a photographer, so I spend a lot of time looking for places with interesting landscapes and light, and this property is pretty extraordinary. The vineyard sits high above Ojai on Sulphur Mountain almost 3000 ft above sea level, reached by a winding mountain road. Once you're up there, it feels completely removed from Southern California city life. Vineyards, mountains, huge skies and views that seem to go forever. If you're lucky, you get to experience multiple climates all within the same day: foggy misty mornings where you sit above the clouds turn into the infamous Ojai pink moment where you get to experience the most stunning sunsets.
The wines are some of the best you will ever taste anywhere, let alone Southern California. This is a relatively young estate, and the wines are made by acclaimed Sonoma winemaker Erich Bradley. The focus is on Rhône varieties, grown organically at high elevation, and the quality is far beyond what I expected from a project that is still so under the radar. It's quite a small operation, roughly 7 or so acres, so the number of bottles of any given varietal are limited to what the vines were able to produce in any given year. If you find one that you like, I'd buy it while you're there because you might not have another opportunity otherwise.
What surprised me most is how few people in LA seem to know about it. Ojai is close enough for a day trip or weekend from Los Angeles, yet this feels nothing like the typical wine-country tasting experience. It's intimate, remote and very personal.
My recommendation: head up to the mountain and experience all that Ojai Mountain Estate has to offer before the influencers discover it. I feel like it's being slept on on the moment but once people find out, it'll be a tough ticket to get.
