点评:If you're looking for a yoga or wellness retreat within a few hours of NYC with regular programming Omega, Kripalu and the Himalayan Institute are likely to be the ones that come to mind. I've been to Kripalu quite a few times but recently tried both Omega and the Himalayan Institute. I wanted to share some info to help others figure out what might be the best fit as I was looking for this info online myself and couldn't find it.
If you're looking to book an R&R, especially over the weekend, Omega is a good fit for people who want to relax and not have much scheduled programming. There are no Friday or Sunday evening classes. So R&R guests only have a 5:30pm class on Saturday and a couple 7 am classes to choose from. If 7 am is too early for a restful weekend (as it is for me) then you're only getting a single meditation, yoga or qi gong class. There are kayaks and canoes you can sign out. You should have prior boating experience though as it is not guided and there are no lifeguards. The lake currently has a plant infestation so you can't swim in the lake and you will be paddling through an excessive amount of plant growth. That said the lake is beautiful above the surface and you can see some interesting wildlife while out on the water. The hiking trails on campus are minimal (2 miles). They are well marked but I'm not sure how much they maintain them throughout the season. There were a lot of fallen trees and one section had an overgrowth of thorny bushes that covered a small section of the trail. There are basketball courts and tennis courts with equipment you can sign out. The outdoor spaces are nice and there are plenty of places to sit outside. However if the weather doesn't cooperate you'll be pretty limited in terms of options. There's a meditation sanctuary, a library, gift store and coffee shop. On Saturdays at 1pm you can get a tour of the sustainability center where they process and treat the water used on campus, which is surprisingly interesting and under-attended. However, if you're interested in more organized programming, year-round programming, and less weather dependent options, I'd recommend Kripalu as there are all sorts of indoor classes, as well as guided hikes, paddle-boarding, kayaking and snow-shoeing. Himalayan Institute has a similarly sparse R&R program but it does have an organic chocolate factory on campus with free tours and free samples which is a yummy and fun option.
If you opt to take a program, Omega seems to have more spiritual and wellness programming, while Kripalu has more programming focused on yoga physical activity. Himilayan Institute seems to be in between the two.
I'm not sure if it was just the programming on the weekend I was there but age range at Omega definitely skewed considerably older.
The lodging options at Omega were wide ranging from semi-private cabins with shared bathrooms to dorms to camping. I opted for a semi-private cabin with shared bath which was great. Kripalu's housing is much more institutional with 2 large buildings that house hundreds of people. Again Himalayan Institute fell somewhere in between.
I would definitely go back to Omega if I can find a program that is the right fit. As my interest is in yoga the options are a bit slim but I really enjoyed Omega and would be happy to return. For an R&R however, I'd personally opt for Kripalu instead as I enjoy having classes and outdoor adventures. But for those looking for an opportunity to truly rest and not do much then I'd recommend Omega for an R&R.
