A Magical Afternoon Among the Ancient Olive Groves of the Petrucci Family

点评：We spent a wonderful part of a sunny autumn afternoon at the beautiful Petrucci family olive farm, whose history dates back to 1600. Our visit combined a tasting of exceptional olive oils with a truly magical picnic among the olive trees. The tranquillity and natural beauty of the grove gave the entire afternoon an almost spiritual dimension and created an experience that we will remember for a very long time.
The Petrucci family has appropriately named this experience “1600” – a reference both to the historic roots of their family business and to the living tradition upon which their work and production continue to be built today.
Accompanied by Sabina Petrucci, vice president of the Sabina DOP Consortium, we first toured the olive mill. She guided us through the individual stages of olive oil production and gave us access to parts of the processing facilities that are not normally open to visitors. We then continued to the storage area, where Sabina explained the strict production standards and certifications behind their oils.
The tour was followed by a professionally guided tasting of several Petrucci olive oils at the Oil Bar. Sabina shared a wealth of fascinating information about recognising the quality of olive oil, tasting it correctly and understanding the characteristics that distinguish an outstanding oil.
After the tasting, Sabina drove us into the hills above the farm, among ancient olive groves offering magnificent views across the surrounding countryside. A picnic basket was waiting for us there, filled with delicious local specialities, wine and some of the finest Sabina DOP olive oils produced by the Petrucci family.
We had an hour and a half to wander through the old olive groves, relax on a blanket and gaze up through the silvery branches towards the blue sky. Later, we regretted not allowing ourselves even more time.
It was an almost mystical experience – extraordinarily liberating for the mind, freeing us from everyday worries and lifting our thoughts towards the sky. The perfect stillness of the grove, its timeless beauty and its connection with the surrounding landscape made this far more than simply a picnic.
If our travels ever bring us back to Lazio, we simply must return and experience this magical moment again.
We concluded our visit by purchasing several olive oils and other delicacies from the farm’s charming little shop.
