Good evening sir/ma'am,
I recently had the opportunity to experience the Mirror Manufacturing Tour and wanted to share how profoundly impressed I was with the entire organization.
The two tour guides were female; one was a sophomore I believe named Anastasia and the other was a recent graduate (I forgot her name). I was thoroughly captivated with awe and wonder during the formal presentation because of how Anastasia spoke. She embodied all the traits that are seen from what I would define as a Teacher. Her breadth of knowledge was masterful because she was able to explain complex topics in simplistic terms while carrying the weight of humility for the ignorance of science. She fluidly articulated the nuances and details of the program's origin story, highlighting various Humans who enabled this moment in present day to exist. The variation of tone and chosen words further deepened the emotional pull of desiring to learn more about the cosmos itself. It was a moment that could easily inspire the next generation of scientists while simultaneously honoring the efforts of historic trail blazers to novelty and innovation. On the walk to the stadium, I had the chance to learn more about her. I was unsurprised to hear some of the details of her own endeavors based on what she had already demonstrated, to include pursuing a dual degree while also having experience as a TA for a revered professor. She assumed her selection was because of luck, however it was obvious that wasn't the case. From what I observed, any rational teacher would be a fool to pass on working with a cognitive equal that happened to have the label of student.
The second tour guide was a recent graduate who was originally from Minnesota. She too had obtained a dual degree, which again, was unsurprising based on what she demonstrated. She spoke from a place of earned and deserved confidence based on her accomplishments. Although at times she expressed an academic hierarchy with the other Human, I understood it came from a place of profound effort and awareness to the personal struggle she experienced to become who she is today. Because of her experience and demonstrated level of understanding, I chose to challenge the thresholds of scientific knowledge by gifting her uncomfortable questions. I purposefully exposed the gaps of current understanding to perceive how the situation would be handled. One particular question I posed was regarding whether computerized technology was actively utilized to overcome the limitations of the engineering process. The precision and accuracy of the manufacturing process is miraculous to say the least, however I questioned whether digital effort to overcome atmospheric interference was being applied to influence the concept of signal to noise ratio, similar to how the image of M87* was acquired.
At the moment, I did not articulate my thoughts nor question with clarity, as the context in which I was asking did not match the reality of where we were on the tour. Understandably, we were on the manufacturing portion and not on the outcomes and application of the product itself, so the moment was similar to the phrase lost in translation. Due to time constraints, she ended the dialogue by stating the question was outside the scope of the tour in regards to the manufacturing process, to which I agreed. As we transitioned to the remainder of the tour, Anastasia approached me and asked for clarity on my question so she could understand it. Again, this was proof of her innately curious and inquisitive mind that is often highly desired in the echelons of science.
The tour concluded after the recent graduate finished by explaining the polishing step. Once we were outside and closing remarks were expressed, she informed me that she had reached out to her supervisor to see if she could obtain clarity for my curiosity.
I'm unsure if she was aware, but in that moment, I was absolutely giddy with excitement by what she demonstrated. Normally when Humans become aware of the thresholds of their understanding, they assume a defensive or deflective position because they innately perceive curiosity as a threat. This occurs due to fear of embarrassment or shame, however she did neither. When she became aware of the gap, she explored it like a true scientist. The night prior I actually completed a tour at Kitt National Observatory and did not have the same outcome with two astrophysicists. I would describe their behavior as arrogantly ignorant.
After sharing with the two tour guides how impressed I was with them along with the program, I asked the same question I posed to an astrophysicist the night prior to the recent graduate: What is science doing to overcome Godel's theorem to propagate innovation and discovery?
She paused for a moment, and after pondering the meaning, responded with a smile saying that's a tough question and she doesn't know. Her response, along with her behavior, again showed proof that the scientific method is still relevant. When humility of awareness to ignorance is conveyed, curiosity and imagination feel safe to discover novelty.
I was only in Tucson for three days, however this particular experience deserved acknowledgement more than a simple review on TripAdvisor. The University of Arizona has earned its claim to being the largest astronomy department on the planet, and I wanted to thank you for creating ripples across Humanity that are nothing short of extraordinary.
