Behind the Barrel — Bourbon Education With a Side of Bad Financial Decisions**
We were told we were the **very first group to take Bardstown Bourbon Company’s new “Behind the Barrel” tour**, which either meant we were VIPs or test subjects. After a few samples, we stopped caring which.
We’ve done a lot of distillery tours, so at this point we’ve heard enough about mash bills, charred oak, and rickhouses to probably fake our way through a job interview at a distillery. But this tour genuinely brought something different to the table.
Learning about Bardstown Bourbon Company, its history, and especially the innovation behind the way they approach Kentucky bourbon was fascinating. The tour was informative without feeling like a chemistry lecture, and it gave us a much better appreciation for how much thought and experimentation goes into what eventually ends up in the glass.
Then came the tasting — which, naturally, is where everyone suddenly became an excellent student.
Michael walked us through three different single-barrel bourbon selections and taught us the proper way to taste bourbon, how to identify different flavor profiles, and how something as simple as **where a barrel sits in the rickhouse** can dramatically change both the proof and flavor.
Turns out there’s a little more to bourbon tasting than taking a sip, nodding thoughtfully, and saying, “That’s dangerously good.”
Who knew?
The tasting took place in the **Bourbon Library**, which may be one of the most appropriately named yet financially dangerous rooms in Kentucky. The walls are packed with bourbon bottles ranging from the Prohibition era to today, including bottles from just about every major distiller you can think of.
And yes — many of them are available to purchase pours from.
So basically, it’s a library where nobody tells you to be quiet and the books can get you drunk.
This place could easily turn a “quick tasting” into a missing afternoon and a suspicious credit-card statement.
We also had the opportunity to purchase our favorite bottle from the tasting, with all three selections being single barrels. That’s a fantastic touch because nothing says “I learned something today” quite like leaving the distillery carrying another bottle of bourbon.
Michael was an absolutely fantastic host. He was knowledgeable, engaging, personable, funny, and clearly passionate about bourbon and what Bardstown Bourbon Company is doing. He made the experience feel relaxed and conversational while still teaching us a tremendous amount.
For anyone who has already done several Kentucky distillery tours and wants something a little different, **Behind the Barrel is absolutely worth booking.**
Five stars for the tour.
Five stars for Michael.
And zero stars for the Bourbon Library’s impact on my self-control.
