Old carriages: young staff, interesting trip

点评：% day - 4 night- Golden West trip around the tablelands behind Sydney, including a trip on the Hunter River postman boat. This trip - now run by Journeys Beyond - is in restored 1960s carriages. On our trip there were too many people for the lounge and dinning cars to seat as a group. This made for more crowding than on the Ghan or Indian Pacific. Staff were young and many seemed inexperienced, putting more pressure on those older and more experienced staff. The final day was a different set of off-train excursions and a different route to that advertised because of 'track work' closing the main line. The replacement tours were well handed,, but the lunch - called high tea - at the Hydro Hotel was poor, with one one finger sandwich per person and one scone per person plus a fancy cake. The tour visited 2 vineyards: one visit was excellent, the other less good. The single cabins are cramped when the bed is down with no room for the cat, let alone the space to swing it. Twice the table we were seated at had to wait a very long time to be served and no recognition from the staff of that fact.For those that like travel by train in a relaxing manner, this is a great experience, buy luxury it isn't. The price of the trip also tends to mean more older travelers many of whom on our trip had done either The Ghan or the Indian Pacific. The View was that this trip was not yet at the same standard as those journeys/
