KAWARTHA ADVENTURE RENTALS TREATS YOUR DEPOSIT AS A REVENUE STREAM
I have been backcountry canoeing and camping for 20+ years and have never had an experience with an outfitter that has left me this concerned about billing and transparency. I originally gave Kawartha Adventure Rentals 3 stars because the staff were friendly and helpful, flexible with timing, and the canoe was in good condition. Unfortunately, the problems with our deposit and delivery charges completely changed my opinion.
Bottle Lake's advertised delivery fee was approximately $135. We were ultimately charged $202.50, with an additional $67.50 deducted from our $500 security deposit. Kawartha Adventure Rentals now claims this was because our group wasn't at the access point and the driver had to make a second trip. That is not what happened. We even tipped the driver $30 for the delivery, yet were subsequently charged another $67.50 from our deposit for an alleged second delivery trip that did not occur. We were never advised that an additional $67.50 charge would apply and never agreed to it. We simply discovered the charge afterward.
For context, this delivery fee is already not on par with other outfitters. For example, Algonquin Outfitters offers free delivery to almost every access point on Highway 60. If you want a canoe delivered to Shall Lake (the same distance Bottle Lake is from Kawartha Adventure Rentals) the charge is only $40 and they are driving on poorly maintained logging roads. They will just leave the canoe there for you and I have never had any issue with Algonquin Outfitters over dozens of rentals.
SECURITY DEPOSIT Their website stated a $250 deposit for our canoe. We were charged $500. Kawartha Adventure Rentals has now acknowledged that the website was wrong and has corrected it. I appreciate the correction, but it contradicts their earlier assertion that the deposit requirements were clearly disclosed and speaks to their credibility.
THE REFUND They have stated that the deposit was processed for refund the day after the rental and somehow took 17 days to refund to a debit card that has a history of processing fund in 3-4 days. Very suspiciously the deposit refund was processed the day we called to demand our money back and this review was originally posted. The full deposit was not returned, only $423.72 was refunded because of the disputed charge. The $67.50 deduction remains unresolved.
What concerns me is the combination of incorrect website information, charges that differed from what we understood when booking, and an explanation for the additional charge that does not match what occurred at the access point. This is not an isolated incident, there are over a dozen similar reviews here of individuals who have experienced undisclosed deductions from their deposits, in many cases having their entire deposit confiscated. Kawartha Adventure Rentals treats security deposits as a revenue stream.
They have also stated publicly that they attempted to contact me to resolve this. They have not contacted me directly. MY ADVICE: Get the exact deposit and complete delivery charges in writing. Screenshot the booking information before paying and check your deposit carefully when the rental is returned. The staff and canoe were good. Unfortunately, I no longer trust the billing process and the owner of this outfitters is not honest or forthright.
We would have potentially provided thousands of dollars in repeat business over the next decade. Instead, the handling of a disputed $67.50 charge has ended the relationship. I cannot recommend Kawartha Adventure Rentals and will not rent from them again. Anyone who asks me about this outfitters will be strongly cautioned.
