I have been backcountry canoeing and camping for 20+ years and have never had an experience with an outfitter that has left me this concerned about billing and transparency.
I originally gave Kawartha Adventure Rentals 3 stars because the staff were friendly and helpful, flexible with timing, and the canoe was in good condition. Unfortunately, the problems with our deposit and delivery charges changed my opinion completely.
THE $67.50 "ADDITIONAL DELIVERY" CHARGE
Bottle Lake's advertised delivery fee was approximately $135. We were ultimately charged $202.50, with an additional $67.50 deducted from our $500 deposit.
Kawartha Adventure Rentals now claims this was because we weren't at the access point and the driver had to make a second trip.
That is not what happened.
Our scheduled delivery was 3:00 PM. We were at Bottle Lake at 3:00 PM and called Kawartha Adventure Rentals from the access point. We were told the driver was moments away. The driver arrived shortly afterward. There was no second trip from Apsley caused by our absence.
We were never advised that an additional $67.50 charge would apply and never agreed to it. We simply discovered the charge afterward.
THE $500 DEPOSIT
Their website stated a $250 deposit for our canoe. We were charged $500.
Kawartha Adventure Rentals has now acknowledged that the website was wrong and has corrected it. This directly contradicts their earlier claim that the deposit requirements were clearly disclosed.
THE REFUND
They have clarified that the $500 deposit was processed for refund the day after the rental, although only $423.72 was refunded because of the disputed charge. I accept that clarification regarding when the refund was processed.
The $67.50 deduction remains unresolved.
Most concerning is the combination of incorrect website information, charges that differed from what we understood when booking, and an explanation for the additional charge that does not match what occurred at the access point.
They have also stated publicly that they attempted to contact me to resolve this. They have not contacted me directly.
MY ADVICE: Get the exact deposit and complete delivery charges in writing. Screenshot the booking information before paying and check your deposit carefully when the rental is returned.
The staff and canoe were good. Unfortunately, I no longer trust the billing process.
We would have provided thousands of dollars in repeat business over the next decade. Instead, a disputed $67.50 charge has ended the relationship.
I cannot recommend Kawartha Adventure Rentals and will not rent from them again.
