点评:Birds of Eden is an extraordinary experience and, much like its neighbour Monkeyland, it comes with a significant price tag. Unfortunately, there is no South African resident discount, which is disappointing — especially considering that when holidaying in Plettenberg Bay, there are so many high-quality attractions to enjoy, all at premium prices. It does make Plett a particularly expensive destination for local tourists.
That said, the experience itself is remarkable. The moment you step inside, the soundscape of bird calls immediately transports you. You’re up close with birds that have largely lost their fear of humans, which allows for incredible proximity and unforgettable sightings. As an added bonus, there were large fruit bats and vibrant, colourful birds everywhere you looked.
The wooden walkways wind up and down through the canopy, across forest floor sections, and past rivers, waterfalls and ponds — cleverly designed to maximise the diversity of species you’ll encounter. Unlike Monkeyland, this is an unguided experience. Guidebooks are available to purchase, but we opted to use a bird identification app on our phone, which was more than sufficient for us.
Parts of the aviary walkways were closed for maintenance during our visit, so it’s hard to know exactly what we may have missed. Even so, we spent about 45 minutes exploring and felt it was a complete and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
A beautifully executed attraction — immersive, peaceful and truly memorable.
