Exploring the Tiny, Hill-Top Town of Monteriggioni....

点评：The tiny, hill-top town of Monteriggioni is an easy and popular day trip from Siena (it’s about 20 mins by car or bus). However its so small that most of the sights (the medieval towers and walls, the castle museum, and the small church of Santa Maria Assunta) can be seen in a very short time.
If you are staying nearby or in Siena, then it’s worth a visit but you really only need to allow an hour or so (maybe two if you want to stop for a drink or lunch in the main piazza).
We had no trouble parking at Parcheggio Cipressino, which is just outside the town walls. Even though it was quite busy and the cars seemed to move slowly, the car-park was large enough that we found a spot easily. It was only a 2 or 3 minute walk from here to Porta Fiorentina, the imposing main gate into Monteriggioni.
There are several nice little cafes and restaurants around the main square and a handful of boutiques and wine bars along the main street.
However the real attraction is climbing the medieval walls that completely encircle the town and walking around the top. I had planned to do this but in the end we missed out. It was such a hot day and the walkways were so exposed that we decided not to do it. I was reluctant to give up on the idea because this was the main reason I was visiting the town, but it really was too hot. If you have a choice, Id suggest visiting on a cooler day. Even though we missed out on this, the walls were still impressive to see. They stretch for over 500 metres and include 14 towers. The entire town is like a small fortress and everywhere we walked, the walls and towers loomed over us.
