点评:Close to the Tsurui-Ito Preserve flows the Setsuri River, a remarkable natural feature that does not freeze during winter. This unique characteristic has been embraced by the cranes, which not only use the river as a nighttime resting spot but also build their nests there in spring. The flock consists of around 200 birds, and the best place to observe them is from the Otowa Bridge, just an 8-minute drive from the Tsurui-Ito Preserve. Nearby, you'll find a spacious parking area and several eco-friendly toilets.
The Otowa Bridge is a haven for photographers—serious ones, at that. Lenses under 200mm are a rare sight; most are 600mm or 800mm, often paired with teleconverters. The crane flock nests about 200 meters upstream from the bridge. What makes this location truly special are the stunning natural surroundings. In freezing temperatures, every branch and twig is adorned with sparkling frost, while mist rises above the river, adding an air of mystery. Through the haze, the silhouettes of cranes emerge, creating a scene reminiscent of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. It’s a true winter wonderland.
This shooting spot isn’t about technical perfection, where every feather or claw of the crane is meticulously detailed—although skill is certainly required, as the shooting conditions are tough. Instead, it’s about photo artistry, capturing mood and emotion through the lens. Here, nature plays the starring role, with the cranes seamlessly blending into the landscape.
In the parking lot, we met a photographer preparing to spend the night in a sleeping bag laid out in his car. The best shots from the Otowa Bridge are captured at dawn (around 7 AM in December), and only the most resilient and determined photographers stay overnight to secure the prime shooting spots in the morning. Temperatures at night can drop to a chilling -30°C, no less!
For us, the evening shots were more than enough. The place is simply breathtaking, unlike anything we had seen before. Be sure to include it in your itinerary!
