点评:I look back on these 3 days trekking to remote ethnic villages in Nam Ha as one of the top experiences in my entire two months in southeast Asia. There are cheaper tour companies in Luang Namtha, but in my experience, you get what you pay for, and my trip with The Hiker was a great value, considering the intimate tour size, their private trails, and the overall authenticity of what we did and where we went.
I was traveling solo and chose to tag along with a couple I met the day before, so it was just us three and our two guides, Peng and Lit. We would become a little family unit over the days that followed.
Peng was an excellent lead guide: friendly and relaxed, a strong English speaker who proactively pointed out things of interest and would answer any questions in depth. He's also an excellent cook! He consistently served up delicious food daily — genuinely some of my favorite meals during my time in Laos — all from ingredients sourced from our market visit the first morning and carried with us the entire trek. I'm sure his family misses his talents in the kitchen when he's out on the trail.
Lit didn't speak as much English, but this didn't stop us from bonding. He was warm, friendly, funny, and talkative (in Lao), and eager to demonstrate bushcraft or foraging techniques whenever the opportunity arose.
We visited a Hmong village the first night, and a Lahu village the second — both were memorable experiences, shifting my romanticized preconceptions of what "remote village" life really looked like. In each place, very few people spoke Lao (let alone English), so functional interaction was limited. But the interactions we did have were warm, genuine, and organic, not staged.
I've had more comfortable, quieter sleeping accommodations (those roosters!), of course. But you pick this trip if you're looking for an adventure! And we absolutely did.
Thanks, Hiker, Peng, and Lit for a truly awesome experience.
