Beautiful Tropical Lagoon

点评：One of my favorite beaches we visited on the Hilo side of the Big Island! This beautiful lagoon is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle and has a really unique feature: the water is much cooler than the ocean because of a freshwater spring fed by rainwater from the volcanic mountains. The fresh water floats on top of the saltwater, so when you swim down toward the bottom, you can feel the warmer ocean water beneath the chilly freshwater. It's such a cool phenomenon to experience!
It's a great spot for swimming and snorkeling. We saw three different-colored eels while snorkeling, which was really neat! There's also a rope swing on the far right side of the park where we watched people swing out and drop into the water.
Parking is free, but the lot can fill up quickly on busy days. When we visited on a Saturday, there were several birthday parties happening, and the main lot was full. There's another parking lot just up the road, with a short walk through the jungle to reach the beach, or you can walk back down the road.
The park has public restrooms, an outdoor shower, and even handrails and steps to help you get in and out of the water. Be sure to wear water shoes because the bottom is rocky. This is a wonderful place to spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing in a beautiful tropical setting. It's also a perfect spot to cool off and enjoy something a little different from the typical beach experience!
