* Veteran company doing this activity in this location for decades
* Family outing in canoes equipped for a number of people
* Fun summer water activity, especially for enthusiastic active teenage boys
* Rafting, paddling and floating
* There is shade of trees while floating
* Helpful pleasant staff in the water
* Not strict about monitoring the time on the canoe in the water
* Appropriate safety life vest in all sizes
* Rest and waiting area appropriate for eating brought picnic lunches
CONS
* It can be busy and noisy
* Many canoes in the narrow river at the same time- actual and near collisions and bumping are not unusual
* Water is thick green with “stuff” in it- presumably from the large trees that give shade
* Two canoes tied together and passengers sit on hard and uncomfortable thick bamboo poles
* Many many people go into the water and (try to) swim, despite everyone being informed that this is against company regulations, and the risk of hitting a swimmer/floater is very real, and steering to avoid them impairs and limits the enjoyment of the activity
* Many campers and camping in tents at the river’s edge- noise and cooking etc
* There are ropes attached to trees on the shore, and daring young people jump in Tarzan-style while you are rafting in a canoe at that exact same point.
* The path of rowing the canoe is downstream more than a kilometer, and then turn around and paddle upstream to return (current is extremely mild)- no collection downstream and return by wheeled bus or van, as in other places that I’ve “visited”
* The waiting area appears old and worn and not inviting, with benches incredibly low to the ground
* Minimal washroom and changing clothes facilities
* Cost averages to 70 shekels per person- as expected and average for the activity, area, country and season but not inexpensive. From the website: “Entrance Fee- One canoe for three adults or two adults and two children (at least one of the children must be younger than twelve years old) – 220 NIS. Family Canoeing (two canoes tied together) – suitable for 5 – 10 people – 350 NIS for the first five people and 30 NIS for every additional person.”
“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because this is what the family chose to do. For me, it was OK. I enjoyed it and liked paddling the canoe. It was a minor instructional lesson in coordination and working together from me for the younger ones.
As stated above, collisions with other canoes and near collisions with people in the water was common and happened frequently.
Sitting for over an hour on these big thick coarse and hard bamboo rods was not present nor comfortable. I suggested to the family that immediately afterwards, we should so check each other and compare and vote who has deeper skin indentations and markings from sitting on the bamboo rods, but it seems that I was the only one interested and willing to do a comparison and vote.
Going down the river and back in over an hour was in the border of being boring and redundant for me.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Let’s just say that I wasn’t surprised by the cost; I value it at 50-60 shekels per person, but here is the price: Entrance Fee
One canoe for three adults or two adults and two children (at least one of the children must be younger than twelve years old) – 220 NIS. Family Canoeing (two canoes tied together) – suitable for 5 – 10 people – 350 NIS for the first five people and 30 NIS for every additional person.
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?
Not of my own volition, but I wouldn’t refuse if I was with a group that insisted on doing this.
ADVICES
* Good summer activity but be aware of the price/cost
* Know that it is a canoe or two tied together and that it involves coordinated rowing with an oar/paddle
* Know that the journey is down and back to the start, and not one way.
* Know that it is crowded in peak season, and how to steer to avoid other canoes
* Know that so many people will get in the water to swim and that there are Tarzan- imitators in routes who will obstruct and complicate your path.
* Know that you will be sitting on long thick and hard bamboo rods- be sure to compare afterwards which of your group has the biggest deepest or least indentations in the skin after completing your adventure journey.
