点评:Calicoan Island sounds fantastic but the reality is very different. None of the beaches have easy access to the water as there is a shallow reef running the whole length of the island. Low tide you have to get across a 100 metres of flattish reef to get to the sea (and more reef), at high tide the water is only waist deep. There is a surf spot next to Calicoan Villas, but the same applies. If you fall off, it is likely to be only a meter deep with a rocky bottom.
There are very few restaurants in Calicoan proper. Most are in resorts and quite a bit more expensive than the usual fare. Expect 300-400 pesos per dish as opposed to 500 for a whole meal for 3 opposite the church in Selangan or in Guiuan proper. Shops and other alternatives are 17km away in Guiuan. We went to La Luna resort to try the Italian and other food for lunch. Nice enough food, but when we went back again for a last night meal they said they were only serving their own guests, so bear that in mind.
The biggest no-no was the beaches. We looked at Yolanda beach to the North of Guiuan as well, and that was reef as well.
Considering the distance (from Tacloban) I really don’t see much to recommend it. The only slight plus was the sand bar just by the bridge to Selangan at Landing Point Beach (see partial map) which is very shallow and suitable for small children.
