点评:8 Day Gobi and Terelj Tour - Solo - Nomad Homestay Option
Asia isn't new to me. From Everest Base Camp to remote villages in Bhutan, tourist hot-spots in Vietnam to the backpacker Mecca of Bangkok, and everywhere in between, I've had a lot of tours and seen a lot of places. I would be hard pressed to say I've experienced a better tour anywhere, and that includes my personal friend's luxury travel company that I've done six tours with through Bhutan. To rank higher than them is saying a lot.
In every way this trip excelled. The itinerary had a lot of driving (entirely expected since it is Mongolia), but was always divided into manageable portions that made travel smooth. Every day had spots and things to see and do, and no time felt wasted as far as itineraries go. It was the perfect balance between activity and rest, and there were always more optional things one could do during down time. It hit all of the highlights mentioned with adequate time at each stop. They allowed us as the tourists to always have a say in how much time we'd like to spend at a place to ensure that we experienced Mongolia how we desired. They would consider our input into our itinerary to make sure we didn't have to spend time doing anything we didn't want to do. Every day we also had the option to shop for supplies which aided in assuring comfort.
While April usually isn't considered "peak-season" it in no way prevented us from having an incredible experience. April offered unique experiences like dancing to Darude in a sandstorm and spending time with some baby animals since this is the birthing season.
I chose the nomad homestay option and while this may sacrifice comfort or luxury, this is the only way to see Mongolia in my opinion. The people of Mongolia are what make the country beautiful and getting to have personal experiences with them in their homes is an unmatched experience. They taught us about their games, culture, and beliefs, and one host attempted to teach us language, but we were a lost cause in that endeavor. Нэргүй was one of our favorite hosts and embodied the heart of a true servant and felt like an older brother. His friendliness and hospitality was unmatched and gave us some of the greatest highlights of the trip.
While all of this is great, there was one reason specifically that this tour now holds my number 1 spot. It was our guide and driver.
Our driver was George and was very humble and kind. He would always carry our luggage to our rooms even though we insisted that we didn't mind helping. Many days he was up early or would stay out late to ensure the car was clean and wiped down from all the dust before we got in. To us this was unnecessary but for George this was a crucial detail to ensure a good experience. The car was comfortable with adequate space and George did a good job of keeping the ride as smooth as possible. Despite the language barrier he was always kind and did whatever he could to serve us and ensure our stay went well. He also had a top-notch Mongolian playlist for the car rides and always encouraged us to connect our phones and share our music as well. Zhurek - ADAM is now in my Spotify library thanks to him.
Our guide Zaya was arguably the reason our tour was one of the best that I've been on in any country. In all the other countries I've been in, tours are transactional and slightly robotic. The guide is no more than a history book who is there to share information and that's it. But that wasn't the case with Zaya. Yes, she was very knowledgeable about all of the stops along the way, but more than being knowledgeable she was relational. Whenever we would arrive at a camp and had free time, she usually would be the one leading and suggesting games, unique experiences, or community time. She easily could have gone off on her own and hid and got some personal time to rest, but instead she was always finding ways to spend time with us and ensure we didn't feel like any time was wasted on the trip.
She was personable and open about her life, and always asked insightful, respectful questions about our lives in order to know us. She had a great sense of humor and always kept the tour fun and lively. Zaya would constantly take pictures of all the experiences and share them immediately to us ensuring no moments were undocumented.
She was always up earlier than the group to prep and would be up late to clean. Her and George were very attentive to requests and always accommodating with food restrictions, preference, quantity, etc. They continued to remember these preferences throughout the trip and other small personal things as well that aided to improving the experience of the trip. One day she had even got up early and came into our Ger before we were awake to start the fire so we wouldn't wake up cold.
One other thing Zaya did incredibly well was maintain appropriate gender boundaries. Being a female tour leader with two men as clients, Zaya was always mindful about knocking on our ger every time before entering to help, hangout or bring food, and assure a professional conduct in her character the entirety of the trip. She managed to be relational enough to feel more as a sister or friend than a guide, but also professional enough to have our respect to view her as the leader who serves rather than the leader who commands. She also struck a good balance of giving us privacy and personal time as well as encouraging us to be involved and participate in other activities.
The list is no where close to exhaustive. In every possible way Zaya excelled and made us wish we had done the longer tour because we were having such a good time. In my opinion Zaya is one of the most valuable assets Sunpath has and is crucial for their continued success as a leading tour company in Mongolia.
Mongolia was supposed to be a "once in a lifetime" experience, but because of Sunpath there's a good chance I'll have to return for their other offerings.
Thank you Sunpath!
Sunpath!
