Lovely place but just falling short

点评：We brought our two grandchildren during the summer holidays and, while we enjoyed our visit overall, we felt that some aspects could be improved.
At just under £50 for a family of four, we thought the admission charge was quite high. We considered booking in advance, but much of the potential saving or convenience was offset by the booking fee.
The highlights of our visit were the Birds of Prey and Mammal Centre and the play area, both of which our grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed. However, it was quite warm on the day of our visit and there was little protection from the sun or sufficient seating when meeting the owls or watching the birds in flight. Some additional shaded seating in these areas would make a significant difference.
The two members of staff covering the café and admissions area appeared to be struggling to manage the demands of both roles, resulting in fairly long delays. Café prices were also at the upper end of what we have experienced elsewhere, while the quality and choice did not seem to justify them.
The toilet provision within the arboretum was disappointing by modern standards. The facilities were cramped and appeared to be over-subscribed, and there were also a considerable number of flies.
We found the maps provided at the entrance not particularly helpful, and signage to the Birds of Prey and Mammal Centre was limited. In particular, there was no indication of how long it might typically take to reach the centre. This would have been useful information when visiting with younger children, particularly when allowing sufficient time for the various activities and demonstrations.
In summary, this is a lovely place with plenty to offer families, and our grandchildren particularly enjoyed the birds of prey, mammals and play area. However, the overall experience was let down by the admission and café arrangements, inadequate seating and shade, toilet facilities, and way finding. Addressing these relatively practical issues would make an enjoyable visit considerably better.
