点评:The Reading Museum is located in Blagrave Street and is a short walk away from the railway station.
The museum is housed within the town hall which is a fine old building completed in the 19th century.
There are lots of interesting artefacts on show relating to the history of the town.
I liked the room with Roman antiquities from the large settlement at Calleva which was around ten miles south of Reading.
Huntley & Palmer produced biscuits in the town between 1822 and 1976. There was much fascinating memorabilia on display relating to biscuit production.
The showpiece of the museum is the embroidery copy of the Bayeux Tapestry which was created by Elizabeth Wardle and other Staffordshire embroiderers in 1885.
It is a faithful recreation of William The Conqueror’s rise to power.
There is also a miniature model of Jackson’s department store which operated in the town between 1875 and 2013.
Sadly, the art gallery was devoid of exhibits at the time of my visit.
Admission is free and the museum is closed on Sunday and Monday.
