Excellent way to spend a rainy day at Mt. Cook

点评：This museum is located inside the Hermitage Hotel. I booked the planetarium show for the evening of my arrival. A live presenter described the night sky in an informative talk.
The next day my Glacier Explorers tour was cancelled due to wind and rain. I spent the day staying dry in the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. One section of the museum is devoted to transportation. Suspended from the ceiling is a DeHavilland Gypsy Major that made history in 1955 when it became the first airplane to make a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier. Also featured prominently is a 1908 Darracq Service Car, used to transport people to Mt. Cook.
The centre has a theatre which shows a variety of movies. It's a good way to pass the time on a rainy day. "Hillary on Everest" was an interesting documentary on Sir Ed's life. He practiced climbing Mt. Cook before his ascent of Mt. Everest. "Mount Cook Magic" was an excellent 3-D film, with breathtaking scenery in 3-D.
One section of the museum was devoted to the history of the Hermitage Hotel. A screen shows footage from the 1957 fire that destroyed the second hotel building. The present hotel is the third. The largest section of the museum is the Hillary Gallery. In addition to climbing Mt. Everest, Hillary also crossed Antarctica by land vehicle and reached the South Pole in 1958. You can see a replica of the Ferguson tractor that was used to establish food and fuel depots for the expedition. Notice the photos of Sir Ed along the wall. You can also see some treasures of Sir Ed from the Museum's collection.
