点评:I’m on a cruise with my mom and are excursion in Costa Maya was canceled. I wanted to see of there was stuff to do at the port (there is!) so I googled. Several people suggested taking a taxi or shuttle to the Malecon. I listened to this advice, and I am so glad I did. It was an awesome experience.
When we walked off the ship we were surprised how big the shopping area was. I had no idea how to get to a taxi and my mom was looking at me like I was crazy. Undeterred, I asked about 3 people where to get a taxi. It is located right outside the tourist area. Lots of taxis. There are signs, but I only saw those after the fact lol.
Taxi ride was $5 a person. Took about 5 or 6 minutes to get there. If you are a shopper, this is for you. If you are a beach person, this is also for you. On one side of the Malecon strip are vendors. On the other side is a gorgeous beach. My mom and I shopped, got a foot and leg massage on the beach for $15 each, and sat by the water for a bit. It’s one long strip, you can’t get lost.
The vendors at the shops were mildly aggressive but no more (maybe even a little less) than the vendors at the port. You can bargain with them, not sure if you can do that at the port. I ended up getting gorgeous handmade things for good prices. My favorite is a hand made chess set. The man who sold it to me says his father goes into the forest for the wood. The man was in an accident so he can’t collect wood anymore, but he helps his father create the chessboard and pieces. He was so thankful for my purchase and so kind. Most of the people there were really lovely.
It was super easy to get a taxi back to the port. We walked around there for a bit before heading to the ship. The Malecon was a more authentic experience, but the port was lovely too.
If you are on a cruise, consider going to the Malecon. My mom and I had an amazing time!
ETA: I saw some reviews saying there were dogs roaming around, but I did not see any dogs at all.
