点评:Anyone familiar with the Greek islands history is aware that it is filled with both conflict and trade, one often resulting from the control of the other. For centuries this area was the centre of various trade routes, routes that had to be protected and islands that were strategic to the are and had to be held.
The town of Naoussa on the north shore of the island of Paros was one such place. The town was settled y the Venetians in the 14th Century who recognized that the large bay with its placid waters made an excellent anchorage. To protect the harbour and town they built a small castle or fortress. The remnants of that still exist and are one of the main tourist attractions of the town.
The fortress is at the eastern end of the harbour and can be reached by walking along the path atop the eastern arm of the breakwater. The castle sits a little less than halfway along the breakwater’s length.
The castle itself is not overly large or impressive. It’s a small circular stone structure open topped. Along the walls are numerous openings at water level used by the defenders to both observe and fire from.
Sadly, its in poor repair, as no efforts have been made to restore or even preserve it. However, after some 700 years it is still intact more or less.
As there is no actual entrance there are no hours or admission cost. However, it is not recommended to try and access it at night as the pathway there is narrow with the sea on both sides. Persons with mobility issues may also not wish to visit as the path is wet slippery and can even be swamped by waves as can the castle itself through the openings.
