点评:This elegant Deck arch bridge spanning the river Spey , is the oldest cast-iron bridge in Scotland , and was designed by the eminent Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford.
Its unique design of latticed “spider-web” like spandrels, combining strength with delicacy , has had it recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The bridge is 46m long, 10m in height, and has 2 sets of charming mock-medieval turrets at either side of the bridge, giving it a fairytale character.
Amazingly , it was still used by traffic until 1972, when it was then replaced by the new Craigellachie Bridge ( which you can see further downstream from the ramparts.) Now it’s “retired” as a beloved pedestrian footbridge.
The scenery around here is exceptionally beautiful, and apparently the bridge is all lit up at night, which I’d like to see sometime. There’s a car-park just down from the bridge , and lovely walks around this area. Definitely worth a visit.
