点评:Bridlington is somewhere I've visited many times over the years, and having grown up around the seaside, I'm probably not the easiest person to impress with a coastal resort. So I was interested to see how Bridlington would feel on a day trip this time around.
We travelled by train and the journey was smooth, quick and on time, which made for a great start to the day.
Arriving at Bridlington station, my first impression was very positive. The station was clean and even had plenty of flowers, which made a surprisingly good first impression.
We took a slightly different route towards the seafront this time, passing some construction work along the way. One new building particularly caught my eye because it looked rather fancy — only to discover it was going to be a brand-new multi-storey car park! 😂
We headed towards the harbour first, and this was one of the highlights for me. The harbour was busy and full of life, with fishing vessels, pleasure craft and plenty of maritime activity. There were also local shellfish products for sale, and you could get that unmistakable smell of fresh fish in the air — which somehow feels exactly right in a British seaside resort.
The promenade and seafront were also noticeably clean compared with some of my previous visits. There were plenty of litter bins around, which I think makes a real difference, along with good toilet facilities. It was busy with visitors, but the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, with no obvious problems or unpleasantness during our visit.
There was plenty going on too — shops, cafés, food outlets, amusements, rides, a speedboat experience and even a pirate ship ride.
This is still a proper traditional seaside resort.
We spent time around the central/north beach area. Personally, I still prefer Bridlington's South Beach because it's generally quieter and beautifully sandy, but the North Beach was busy with people enjoying themselves and the beach itself was clean, with a mixture of sand and pebbles.
One thing that really surprised me was the sea itself.
I've visited Bridlington many times and I'm used to seeing the water looking rather brownish, but on this occasion it was genuinely blue. With the tide coming in, the views across the bay were fantastic, and you could see the white cliffs of Flamborough in the distance. There was plenty of activity on the water too, which really added to the atmosphere.
And then there's the traditional seaside experience — the amusements, rides, food, fresh doughnuts and all those little things that bring back childhood memories.
The grandson certainly enjoyed himself, which for me was probably the best part of the day. The skinny fries were nothing fancy, but they were bloody lovely, and the fresh doughnuts certainly hit the spot! 😂
We also discovered that we hadn't allowed ourselves enough time to do everything we wanted. Sewerby Hall, Gardens and Zoo is still on our list for another visit, and with the land train available from the promenade, that's definitely something we'll be looking at next time.
In terms of value for money, I'd say Bridlington is reasonably priced. Yes, like most seaside resorts, some things are a little more expensive than you'd pay elsewhere, but nothing we encountered was shockingly overpriced. I've visited other resorts where the prices really do make you stop and think — Bridlington wasn't like that.
Getting around was also easy. The area is well signposted for pedestrians and is predominantly fairly flat, with the occasional incline or decline. We noticed plenty of older visitors enjoying the resort too, which I think says something about how accessible and manageable the area is.
If I could suggest one improvement, it would be some sort of express bus or shuttle service from the railway station directly to the seafront. I suspect it could be very popular, particularly with families, older visitors and anyone who doesn't fancy the walk — and it might even make someone a few quid in the process!
So, would I recommend Bridlington for a day trip?
Absolutely.
We didn't run out of things to do — we ran out of time.
There's the beach, sea, promenade, harbour, fishing boats, amusements, rides, food, shops and plenty of traditional seaside atmosphere, with even more attractions around the wider area still to explore.
For me, Bridlington also brought back some childhood memories. But perhaps the nicest thing was seeing my grandson enjoying himself and creating some of his own seaside memories.
That's probably what a good British seaside resort is really all about.
We'll be back — and next time, we're making time for Sewerby. 🌊⚓🎡❤️
