点评:The 12th century Church of St John the Baptist is one of the main sights on any walking tour of Burford - apparently its one of the top 10 most visited churches in England.
However, if like us, you you are visiting on a summer’s weekend, it’s very likely that there will be a wedding here and you won’t be able to look inside (this happened a lot during our stay in the Cotswolds).
Even if you can’t go inside, it was still worth visiting and having a quick look around the churchyard and cemetery.
Founded in 1175, the church benefitted from the thriving Cotswolds wool trade. As money poured into the area, wealthy wool merchants directed large amounts of it towards the church. Whether they were looking to secure their place in the next world, or simply to increase their status in this world with a grand display of piety, the church put the money to good use. The church was enlarged and a spire was added, as well as beautiful stained-glass windows.
The churchyard had a beautiful rose garden which was in full bloom when we were there. White and the palest of pink roses lined the path to the main entrance.
Also of interest were the strange medieval 'bale tombs'. These curiously shaped stone chests were built for wealthy wool merchants and we saw a number of them around Cotswolds churches. The rounded, arched tops are said to represent the bales of wool that had made both he merchants and the town so wealthy. I suppose if you cant take it with you, you might want to try and take a little piece of it in one form or another.
PARKING: I believe there’s free parking at the Guildenford car park near the church but I’d recommend grabbing any parking spot you see because Burford gets horribly crowded in the summer. We arrived early in the morning and we were very lucky to get a free street parking on the western side of the High Street which has no time limit (its 2 hours only on the other side).
