点评：This pointless feudal anachronism is an example of extractive monopolistic privilege that still hangs on despite lacking any common-sense justification.
The fact that the Swinford bridge is one of the few places in the vicinity of Oxford where it is possible to cross the Thames enables the current owner to base his business model on extorting cash from motorists by continuing a mediEVIL rent-seeking practice only made possible by an ancient act of Parliament that is just begging to be repealed.
Specifically, he employs a handful of insolent or surly teenagers to sit in a t(r)oll booth on the bridge and dun unsuspecting motorists for cash. These specimens care nothing for the frustrations of queuing motorists, each of whom is forced to pointlessly sit for tens of minutes during peak hours, having their time unproductively wasted as they creep forward in fits and starts through a thickening fog of exhaust fumes that poisons the air for drivers and t(r)ollbooth lurkers alike while being compelled to wait their turn to deposit their pathetic, tiny 5 pence coin into the clutches of the extortionists.
As if this endless queuing to deposit negligible sums was not already bad enough, the only type of payment accepted is today's anachronism in this era of smartphone wallets and cashless apps – the physical coin.
I wish all motorists would do as I do, namely ignore the lurking pests in their booths and simply drive past them. They have no effective enforcement mechanism against refusenik motorists, and the sums claimed would be so small that the cost of attempting to recover them in the courts would be grossly disproportionate in terms of the time, effort and self-exposure to public ridicule that would be required when trying to do so.
