点评:This has been described as possibly one of the most important schools in England that revolutionised ideas on teaching infants
Many of us will have visited Victorian school rooms and learnt of the fierce discipline in them. In fact Victorian Infant teaching was much more enlightened than people realise.
Samuel Wilderspin was a Victorian educationalist who revolutionised the teaching of infant children. He was 150 years ahead of his time with his ideas. School needed to be appeal to the senses of the children and involve a wide range of activities to appeal and stimulate the children. He wasn’t a great believer in rote learning and used marching, clapping, singing and free play outside to keep their attention. His ideas were very different to the strict discipline associated with the Victorian schools He established over 2000 schools and this is the only one to survive.
In the mid C19th a new school was needed in Barton upon Humber. Along with the traditional classrooms for boys and girls, this also included an infant classroom where Wilderspin taught along with his wife and daughter.
The school was closed in 1978 and has now been restored as a museum. It still has a Victotrian and a Second World War classroom, but the highlight is defintely the Wilderspin classroom. This is completley different and quite unexpected with its gallery of stepped seats at one end and ‘teaching posts’ at the other, along with examples of the boards used. These covered a wide range of topics - natural history, mathematics, geography etc. Older children known as monitors were allocated small groups of younger children and questioned them about the information on the different teaching boards.
Wilderspin thought parents needed to take responsibility for the health and progress of their children and parents were given a copy of the school rules to hang up at home - not only did this remind the children but also reminded parents of their duties too... They were expected to send their children clean and washed with their hair cut short and clothes well mended by half past eight. If a child arrived half an hour late, they were sent home.
There were also very clear rules for teachers too, Some rules are still relevant today “Teachers should be with the children in the playground. This is absolutely essential to prevent accidents, to attend to the moral and physical training and, above all, to see that the children acquire habits of honesty and kindness to each other.”
The school is a wonderful blast of the past. There is so much to see and enjoy. (Don’t miss the communal earth closet in the Infant playground!) There is a lot of information and staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and keen to talk about what it was like. There are also recorded memories people who were at the school before it closed.
Unfortunately the cafe is now closed... but don’t let that put you off visiting.
