点评:Like other reviewers, I cannot understand why this route is not more popular (although we don't know any others!). My son and I loved it. Perhaps it's because the trail starts at 2,000m, as opposed to 2,300 for the Yoshida route, and is 2km longer and the Fujinomiya route.
The trail is extremely well marked so it is hard to get lost. The officals at the base were efficient and friendly, as was the guy who sold my son a stick for the stamps.
The forest that one walks through for the first hour or so is fabulous, and then it's all rock.
Most locals say it's about 5.5 hours hiking from the start (the fifth station bus stop) to the summit. We stayed at the Setokan hut (6th station) and it was excellent. For most people the hut is about 90 minutes from the start and four hours from the summit. We are pretty fit and so did it in 70 minutes and three hours and 10 minutes respectively.
The one "unpleasant" bit of the hike was the human traffic jam after the Subashiri trail merges with the Yoshida trail at the 8th station. Progress was reduced to a crawl for the last half an hour.
Once at the summit we walked along the crater for a few hundred metres to escape the hordes, which I'd highly recommend.
The descent was great fun - running down the soft sandy scree with poles made it almost like skiing. I would definitely advise wearing gaiters and taking poles. We got down in a little under two hours but we were moving pretty fast. The official guides say 3-5 hours (we passed some people moving very slowly). The first bus back to Gotemba from the fifth station leaves at 7:55am so there's not much point getting there before 7:30am, which gives you time to have your stick cut, if you want, and have a drink.
Take a few thousand yen in cash because that's all you can use to pay for drinks, snacks, stamps and use of the toilets at the huts. Water and drinks are for sale all the way up and at the summit so you don't need to carry everything for the whole trek.
