点评:We tired very hard to find out everything ahead of time about the trails that we would be doing ~ this one got lost in translation from the maps.
So here the deal ~ pay at the National Park booth (in our case the Visitor Center) then drive a single lane twisty road to Jawbone Parking lot (50 spots) there is picnic areas here and decently clean bathrooms here as well.
Your start on Balconies Trail were we saw condors up close and trees were very present and hike was very easy and refreshing!!! Then you cross a small bridge that leads you to the Balconies Cliff Trail ~ this is where the fun beginnings. we started on the right decent moderate ~ groomed but rocks and roots definitely present but no problem ~ after less than 1/4 mile you come to a 'Gated' area where the caves start.
The caves ~ you can turn around at this point of the gates ~it only gets difficult from here. You have a feeling like your Indiana Jones with these huge boulder lingering over our heads being held by other boulders that have fallen over. The caves come into view get the flashlights ready (headlamps would be best to keep hands free) it is dark and narrow and I had to ride most of the walk on my but so I didn't fall on my face. The cave last only about a 1/4 mile. Once you get out on the North end you can see another gate with same warning for people going in.
This is where I should have turned around ~ cause the left hand side of this loop ~~~ HOLY MOLY ~ I had to stop no joke a dozen time ~ no amount of water was helping this aging body (40's~ & decent shape) it was 100+ degrees under the direct sun the day we were there and no cover of trees or anymore caves or anything or relief. The hike was strenuous and mostly up hill on the left side. Plus this side is equal to the length of the other side plus the caves together!
Conclusion~ 1.5 hours~ 2 mile loop hike that you can make easy if you stay to the right and come back from the right and not do the true loop the left ~ good luck and Bring plenty of water, great supportive shoes and lots and lots of sunscreen and a good hat. And take your time ~ heat stroke is no joke!
