We visited Shrewsbury Prison today as a family and had a very impactful experience. Walking through the prisoner’s journey—from the transport van to the cells and finally the hanging room—was quite sobering and left us all feeling rather shocked by the reality of the process.
Accessibility & Experience:
A major plus point was the accessibility. My 22-year-old son is physically and mentally disabled, and we found the building very easy to navigate. The stairs are sturdy, and the historical facts provided throughout the tour are excellent. My son initially thought he might meet "real" prisoners, but once we understood the self-guided flow, we found the educational aspect very well-presented.
The Kitchen/Cafe:
Unfortunately, the kitchen area let the experience down. The staff need to be much more observant. We sat for 20 minutes waiting for our food before I approached the counter. It turned out the young lady had forgotten to put our order through, despite us having already paid. We then had to wait a further 20 minutes for the food to arrive. While I understand the "prison" theme, the service shouldn't feel like a punishment!
Gift Shop:
One quick note for the retail team: there was a total lack of T-shirt sizes smaller than 3XL. It would be great to see a better range of sizes for visitors who want a souvenir.
Tip: Definitely book your parking slot in advance! Overall, a great day for history buffs, but the cafe service needs a sharp eye.
