点评:First of all, I have designed and overseen the building of numerous youth camps and national park campgrounds in my career. This campground could easily serve as an example of some of the worst campground designs ever. We spent $426.83 to camp for two nights (4 adults & 2 children.) And this did not include any food purchases.
Make no doubt about it, the natural elements of this canyon are very nice. Kids love the place. There is potential for this area to be extremely nice. But when people just simply do not know what they are doing, you end up with the opposite outcome. Here’s what you need to know so that you are not surprised on your visit:
1. In addition to the expensive campsites, each individual in your party must pay the “Canyon Access Fee” for every day you are in the canyon. This easily made this the most expensive camping trip ever for us and our two grandchildren.
2. Because we had traveled a full day to reach the area, we arrived mid-afternoon to set up camp. There was a check-in procedure that required checking the boxes for many items of import to the folks at Veyo. They did not include most of the things that would be important to us as campers.
3. The individual at check-in seemed to want to be helpful, but was simply not trained on campground information. (You check-in at the walk-in entrance to the pool.) No information about parking or finding and delineating campsites was provided.
4. You actually drive across a river (through the water) to get to the camping areas. This is a very cool experience, and even though we had 4WD, we saw many 2WD sedans make it across with no problem. (Other than a lot of exhaust steam!)
5. The layout of the campsites is a critical problem. We stayed at campsite 16. Our neighbor’s tents were later pitched within 5 or 10 feet of our tent. Each site is about the size of a large bedroom, with no or little differentiation between them.
6. Many of the campsites (especially sites 1-12) are simply portions of a large gravel parking lot delineated by numbered signs.
7. Nearly all sites are covered with a type of crushed volcanic rock that has extremely sharp edges. You can expect this surface to tear your tent floors and create leaks in air mattresses.
8. Parking is a nightmare. There is insufficient parking for the vehicles that the campground requires. Our site neighbor ended up with significant damage to a very expensive truck when he tried to get close to campsite 17 to drop off his gear. (By the time he finished unloading and setting up, another party had pitched a large tent on what appeared to be the road directly in front of his vehicle. This meant he had to try to turn around on a very narrow road with large boulders, that were small enough to avoid a driver’s view, but large enough to destroy a vehicle panel.)
9. For our visit, we had just completed camp set-up in an area that was not clearly delineated by borders between sites. An unhappy lady then came by (after 3 pm) and told us we had to take down our camp completely, as we had arrived before 4:30 pm. (Since we had to pay for a full day of pool use for that day, we had made a point to arrive early enough for the kids to enjoy the pool.)
a. It was just me and my 7-yr-old granddaughter at that moment, and we explained that we had no way to remove our gear, as my wife had gone into town for groceries.
b. They said they would have to charge us for an additional all day-use charge in order for us to stay. We had no choice but to agree to this. We essentially paid for an extra night of over-priced camping,
c. Then she told us that we were about 5 feet across the border for campsite 17, and that we would still have to move our entire campsite. We unloaded our tent and dining awning and began moving everything. The lady came back with a man who placed a post showing the line between campsites. It turns out we were only 2 feet across the line, but still had to set up camp twice.
d. The lady then accused us of taking the table from the adjoining campsites. When we arrived, the site had three tables connected, end-to-end. We had moved two of them away from our site, because there was not room for them along with our tents. But one was still partly on what she explained was our site.
10. We used a credit card for check-in that alerts us to every charge. You should be aware that they place large “deposit” charges for using their campsite and picnic areas. (Although it is not really possible to make them much worse.) While setting up our camp for the second time, we were alerted to the extra charge, along with another deposit (we had already paid.) A week, later, we have still not received all of our deposits.
11. Throughout our stay, we kept accumulating more charges. So, keep a watch on your card on file. Once they have it, they may continue to make charges. We tried to address our issues before leaving, but not all to our satisfaction.
12. They say that there are bathrooms and showers for camping. These are at the pool, which is a 20-30 min roundtrip hike from some campsites.
13. At the campground, near the pickleball court and parking lot camping area, there are 2 porta-jons. The locks don’t work on these, so be prepared to multi-task from a sitting position. And be prepared to hold your breath.
14. The showers are at the pool, not close at all to the campground. In the Men’s room, there is one toilet, one urinal, and one shower. This has to serve hundreds of people who just use the pool, as well as the hundreds more who camp. The result of how well this accommodates hundreds and hundreds of people does not require a PhD in math.
15. The only drinking water available for campers is from a small drinking fountain at the pool.
16. At night, with hundreds of campers cramped so closely together that you can hear whispers in your neighbor’s tent—and with no restrooms available—well, you can use your imagination as to how (and how close!) other campers will relieve themselves in the night. The sounds of splashing just outside your tent will be followed by an unpleasant smell.
17. You should also be aware that the camping sites are the exact same geography as the picnic, rock climbing, and kid crawdad hunting areas. So, expect a parade of people all day in the five feet between you and the next tent.
18. We brought our own food, but our neighbors in site 17 did not. For two adults and one child, they spent over $100 for each meal. They also had to wait at the pool area for over an hour for each meal.
19. The pool area is pretty nice. It is designed so that kids of all ages can enjoy it. There are some nice picnic areas connected to the pool deck, with shade from the trees along the river. The problem is, they block almost all of these off with “RESERVED” signs. In our two days there, we rarely saw people actually using these reservations.
20. On weekends, the pool is so crowded that it is difficult to enjoy.
In summary, do not camp at Veyo. Every single camper that we spoke to said they will never return to camp.
If you want to use the pool or take kids to catch crawdads, try to go on a weekday. And bring your own food and drinks.
