A great sailing trip on board an historic Thames sailing barge

点评：We had a wonderful experience on board the barge Hydrogen on Saturday 25th April. The trip was a full day sail and we had an eerily misty departure from Maldon at 7.30 am. By mid morning this led to a brilliant day of sunshine and light wind to allow us to majestically sail the river Blackwater to its mouth and back. The crew took great care of our safety without being over the top and answered all our questions, providing information along the way.
The food and beverages were excellent, well presented and of high quality, the meat being from the local butcher. The bar provided a good selection at reasonable prices.
It was very peaceful and relaxing sitting up on deck as we passed little moorings and larger yacht clubs . Out closer to the sea we spotted a lone seal who had caught a large fish and then three porpoises.
On our way back Paul the captain asked if anyone wished to have a go steering the barge which I couldn’t resist.
We returned to Maldon just after 7.00pm with red faces but great memories.
I would thoroughly recommend this trip. However even on a warm day, do as other reviewers have said, take some warm clothing as it is deceptively cooler out on the river at times.
