The Beach is a Nightmare

点评：There are not very many beaches in south eastern MN that are not on the Mississippi river. During the recent heat wave I wanted to bring my two year old son to a nice beach with clean water. When I was young, my family would spend up to two weeks over the course of a summer camping in Whitewater State Park. These are some of the fondest memories of my childhood. An iconic component of those memories is the time we would spend hanging out at the beach near Chimney Rock trail.
I remember clean, white sand, cold, clear water, watching tadpoles nibble at my toes, and crowds of people. Based on those memories, My wife and I brought our son to this staple of my youth. I regret that choice. I returned to this beach for the first time in almost 20 years only to discover that the beach has been transformed.
It is no longer a space maintained for the enjoyment of campers and hikers. It has instead been given to a flock of Canada Geese. The beach was covered in excrement. The geese are fully domesticated and extremely aggressive. The turbidity of the water is so high that I could not see the bottom in six inches of water. The water was warm and the tadpoles are gone. The geese attempted to attack my son multiple times and would have bitten him if I had not intervened. The birds own that sand and it is obvious humans are no longer welcome there. It was a disgusting, vile place. Nothing like the space I enjoyed so much when I was young. We left almost immediately after arriving.
I am baffled and disappointed by this experience. I know the park has financial resources. There have been significant changes in the form of new construction all over the campground. It is busy. Yet, none of those resources are being diverted to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of their beach. The beach should be closed and all signage acknowledging its existence should be removed if it is intended as a habitat for water fowl. It certainly is no longer intended as a place for families to seek recreation and relief from the heat.
