Some of the best hikes we’ve ever done

点评：Had two days of absolutely wonderful walking on Sifnos.
Staying in Kamares (beautiful bay and lovely town), started each walk by getting the 7.15am bus to Apollonia (10-min journey for 2 Euros). This meant we got most of the effort done before the September sun got too hot, and had the afternoons to relax on the beach.
To plan and follow the trails, we downloaded the online Sifnos map through the Avenza Maps app. The routes are pretty well marked on the ground, but we’d have got lost without this app always pinpointing our position.
Day 1 did Trail Route 1 circular route to Kastro and back. Delightful cobbled paths up & down between villages and old olive farms - to the sea cliffs at Kastro - exploring its maze of historic narrow streets - then back. About 4 hours in all with lots of rests and stops for photos.
Day 2 Route 6B up Profitis Elias - highest point on the island, with a fascinating monastery that was all open to explore, and immense views in all directions. We cut down to Route 6 and followed it west - steeply down through a beautiful wild world of rocky paths, clifftop conifers, little white churches, and sparkling sea views. Then a hard hot haul up to the ridge and very steeply down Route 6A to Kamares - with sensational views across the bay and mountains to Serifos on the horizon.
One of the best walks we’ve ever done. About 6 hours in all. Saw only 5 other walkers all day. We wore walking boots and sun hats, and had 3 litres of water each.
