点评:Vijay Vitthal Temple
It’s a beautiful temple complex which was home to Lord Vithoba when He was relocated from Pandharpur to save Him from the onslaught of Mughal rulers. After you get dropped at the main parking lot, an electric vehicle drops you off at the entrance of this monument. We had hired the services of a guide (Rs. 750) – I strongly recommend this as it’s important to understand the history of the place.
As you enter the premises you see the famous Chariot which is printed on the back of the new Rs. 50 notes. It’s a true selfie moment. The premises comprise of 3 main halls – Kalyan Mandapam – where marriage rituals take place, Bhajan Mandapam & the most mesmerising Sangeet Mandapam. The beauty of the Sangeet Mandapam is that each pillar emanates the 7 “surs” of Indian classical music when tapped by our fingers. Imagine this technology 500 years back! Alas one can’t tap these pillars any longer as entry inside the Sangeet Mandapam is prohibited.
Then there is the Garbha Gruha where the idol of Lord Vithoba used to be placed. The most unique feature of this Garbha Gruha is that the Pradakshina is to be performed 1 level below the main temple. The thought behind this is that we are always lower than our Lord or we need to look up to our Lord while praying!
Our guide very nicely explained every single detail. He helped us take pictures as well. The visit took us an hour
Krishna Temple
This is another temple with a large courtyard. The Gopurams and carvings are dilapidated due to constant attacks from the enemy, but one wonders what a beautiful sight it must have been just by seeing the remnants of the architecture & carvings. Again, off season was a bliss as we just sat at one side of the courtyard and took in the deafening silence that surrounded us. It’s one of the must visit places in South Hampi
Maha Navami Dibba
This place covers a huge area and houses the Kings Assembly, Public Bath, Pushkarni (the sacred Kunda), Kings Secret Chamber & the Dance Hall.
We explored every single place within this monument. The Pushkarni has been so beautifully created, with steps for people to climb inside the well to draw water. The public bath was almost 2 times an Olympic size swimming Pool! We made the mistake of not engaging a guide here. I strongly recommend taking a guide along to enhance your viewing experience as you hear about the History from him.
Lotus Mahal & Elephants Stable
This is another ticketed monument in South Hampi. The Lotus Mahal or the Palace of the Queen is situated within a vast area with well-manicured lawns all over. It’s a delicately carved symmetrical structure which was not attacked by the Mughals as it has an Indo – Islamic architecture.
Behind the Lotus Mahal stands the luxurious Elephants Stable. It’s a massive structure built to keep 11 elephants of the Royal army. They say if the elephants were kept in such luxury by the King one can only imagine the princely family houses!
