We were greeted instantly by a lovely host, who checked us in for our pre-purchased “Grass to Glass” tour and tasting. Once our tour started, we walked out the door to a walkway with several different verities of sugar cane. Our hostess and guide, gave in depth history to the area, the building and the sugar cane.
She walked us through their distilling process and showed us why they are such a cut above the rest in the rum industry. So many(if not most) use a molasses in the making of rum. Not Ko Hana. They use an agricole-style rum from heirloom sugarcane grown on-site.
We walked to the storage area where they age the rum and the smell is out of this world amazing. The sweet smell catches you off guard and the sugar cane really shines through.
I was not sure what to expect when I tasted the rum. I also was able to upgrade to the reserve flight while my wife had the cocktail flight.
I can tell you the rum is next level. You can taste the craftsmanship and care that goes into every bottle. The Koho is very close to a bourbon taste with carmel/vanilla with a hint of spice and the Kea has a couple of different varieties based on the type of sugar cane used. Both of which are amazing….. But the Koa, is by far one of the best things I have ever had. It has a premium price tag on it, but when you taste it, you see why.
I could go on and on about Ko Hana, but my wife and I had an amazing time, learns something we knew nothing about and walked away with great rum and amazing memories.
