French origin, modest inside, colorful stainglass windows
Our Lady Of La Salette Cathedral的点评
点评：Another expression of Catholicism in Madagascar. This cathedral was consecrated in 1931. The style is European and inspired by a French church in Rives dans l'Isère, where the missionaries who settled in Antsirabe were originally from.
The belltower is 45 m tall and below are two rosettes and the smaller, upper, one has a clock in the middle. Three doors with gothic arches welcome you.
La Salette is less known than Fatima or Lourdes but is recognized within the Catholic Church. Her apparition to two shepherd children in France in 1846 carried a message of prayer, penance, and reconciliation.
The church follows a Latin cross plan, featuring a long, eight-bay nave flanked by side aisles with beautiful stain-glass windows; the structure measures 60 meters in length and 15 meters in height.
The cathedral’s colonial style is well preserved. Its interior is very modest with blue ceilings and mostly white walls. Near the entrance hung three long ribbons on each side of the center aisle, in green, red, and white, the colors of Madagascar. Not sure if this was due to some special occasion or if they’re always there. It added a certain whimsy to the place. Beautiful stain-glass works of art surround the otherwise plain and sober, interior.
This cathedral is represented on a 1994 Malagasy 24 ariary postage stamp.
Considering how poor the country of Madagascar is, I feel like it’s appropriate for them to have a simple yet classy cathedral like this one.
The cathedral is not that far from the Grande Avenue so if you happen to be in Antsirabe, it’s worth a look and a thought.
