Tuxachanie Hiking Trail的点评
点评：In mid-May 2026, I hiked from the HWY 49 trailhead to Airey Lake, one half of the Tuxachanie trail. The distance is just a little less than 6 miles. The trail has posted mile markers. The trail is well marked with white diamonds. There are several bridges in good shape before mile 4. As reported in 2023, just past mile marker 4 there is a wide stream without a bridge or plank crossing. On the right side of the stream are wood knolls that you can step on to reach within 4 feet of other side. Someone kindly left two corded ropes spanning that last 4 feet. You can use that to get to other side (your boots may get still get wet). There are low places on the trail that may hold water after rain. I hiked 3 days after last rain and I could just find enough trail space to avoid wet spots. Boots would be useful after mile 2.
If possible hike with a friend and take cellphones. On my hike between mile 3 and 4, I came to a halt in front of a 4 foot plus timber rattlesnake stretched out on the trail. It raised its head about a foot and pointed at me and rattled. I stepped back to 15 feet and after a minute it laid back down and moved off the trail. I've hiked this trail several times: I have seen black snakes and one speckled King snake, but this was first poisonous snake to meet on trail.
Airey Campground is reachable by car. The bathroom there was clean and has a wash basin (fill your canteen). Because I hiked solo, I left an electric bike there to ride back to the Hwy 49 trailhead. The distance by bike, by road is about 8 miles.
