Located at 3,200 meters above sea level, it also serves as the main starting point for climbing Mount Aragats, especially the Southern and Western summits. For the Eastern and Northern summits, starting near Gegharot Waterfall is a better option.
The road is usually open from mid-May to mid-October, but conditions can change quickly, especially early in the morning if the bulldozer has not yet cleared the snow. There is a restaurant on the lakeshore serving the traditional Armenian dish khash; it is also responsible for keeping the road clear of snow. Some sections are exposed to strong winds, and from mid-September onward, snow may remain on the ground. Drivers using rental cars with summer tires and limited mountain-driving experience can easily get stuck.
Overall, Lake Kari is a great place to see snow in summer, often until August—a memorable experience for visitors from tropical countries who rarely encounter snow.
