Quiet historic merchant street near Sasayama Castle - elegant Edo & Meiji era townscape
Kawara Tsumairi Merchant Houses Street
This is a Preservation District for Traditional Buildings located to the east-southeast of Sasayama Castle Ruins. The street is lined with traditional townhouses dating from the late Edo period through the Meiji era, stretching mainly along an east-west route. Unlike the more rustic image often associated with typical Kominka (old Japanese houses), the tiled roofs and plaster walls here create the dignified atmosphere of historic merchant residences.
Today, most of the lively commercial activity in Tamba-Sasayama is concentrated north of the former castle grounds. Although this district also contains a few cafes and restaurants, both the number and variety are much more limited compared to the busier northern area. Perhaps it was simply the day I visited, but the district felt relatively quiet, almost as if the bustling prosperity of the past had long faded away.
At the same time, however, that calm atmosphere is part of the district's charm. The combination of historical elegance and the relatively small number of visitors makes it an excellent place to slowly walk around and carefully observe the architecture and craftsmanship of these old buildings-something that is becoming increasingly rare elsewhere in Japan.
