点评:I spent 4 days in Gorongosa NP in September 2026
WEATHER
* A little chilly in morning but warm in afternoon
* Slash-and-burn by the surrounding locals to prepare for the next crop season is the biggest bummer. When the wind blows towards the park, it creates a hazy environment. The air quality is so bad that I was coughing nonstop for 2 days. Naturally, the sky was chocked with smoke and no sunset could be observed.
LANDSCAPE
* Mix of woodlands (fevertree, winterthorn, etc), palm forests, shrubs, flood plains, grasslands, lakes, and seasonal pans.
WILDLIFE
* Waterbucks galore, numbering 65,000
* Excellent diversity of antelopes are fairly easy to spot (nyala, kudu, hartebeest, wildebeest, bushbuck, reedbuck, oribi, impala etc)
* Lions are common sightings. Saw a young mating pair, a solo male with mane, and another solo male with kill
* Pack of 20+ wilddogs including 6 pups. Difficult sighting but lucky enough to see them roughousing in good light. There are supposedly 200+ dogs in the park
* Elephants in these park have clearly been traumatized during the civil war years. With the better gene pool depleted, the remaining individuals appear smaller in stature and have stunted-looking tusks. They aren't friendly like the elephants in Botswana or Zimbabwe. They often charge and mock-charge at vehicles.
* Unique, rare sighting of crochet zebras at the plains north of Lion House
* Civets and genets are common night sightings. Civet can be seen during daylight
* Birds like marabou stork, saddle billed stork, ground hornbill, pelicans, are also around at the seasonal pans
* No rhino, giraffe, and cheetah in park
SAFARI ACTIVITIES (INTERNATIONAL PRICES)
* No self drive allowed
* $20 per night park fee
* $60 morning safari
* $65 afternoon safari
* Free pangolin demo
* Free EO Wilson lab visit
GATEWAYS
* Beira and Chimoio are the most common gateways and both are connected to Maputo by LAM
* Beira is also connected to Joburg and Addis Ababa by Airlink and Ethiopian Airline, respectively
TRANSPORT FROM BEIRA
* Beira - Inchope: Good paved road
* Inchope - Turn off to park (-18.93482,34.13294): Paved road with some potholes
* Turn off to park (-18.93482,34.13294) - Park Gate (-19.00017,34.20118): Gravel road accessible by sedan
* Park Gate (-19.00017,34.20118) - Chitengo (-18.98022,34.35053): Gravel road accessible by sedan
* Total journey is 4-4.5 hours
* Road transfer cost is ridiculous and ranges from 9000 - 16000 mzn, one-way. Every single tourist I met complain about how absurdly expensive it is. Gorongosa NP is known locally as the "rich men safari" destination. Despite the misnomer due to the range of accommodations available, local drivers are taking advantage of the situation
* Bush flight by Air Gorongosa is also possible
ACCOMMODATIONS
* Budget: Meru tent or RTT camping. 5* ablution facilities. Okay cooking setup.
* Mid-range: Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge. Clearly in need of some TLC and maintenance upkeep
* Luxury: Chicari Camp and Muzimu Lodge
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUDGET/MID-RANGE and LUXURY
* The key thing to note is the guided safari game drives for all levels of accommodations are operated from the same stable of 12 guides
* However, what I have noticed is that the better, more experienced guides tend to be placed on rosters with the luxury accommodations, with 3 stationed at each Chicari and Muzimu, respectively
* This leaves 6 guides behind at Chitengo to cater to the mid-range and camping guests. The quality for these remaining guides are inconsistent at best. So it is the luck of the draw on who you get, based on who is working vs on leave, who booked private vehicle and therefore assigned the better guide, etc.
* Luxury camp guests who stay 5+ nights are given the opportunity to attend a 3h pangolin morning feeding session in the park. During that time, the pangolin feeds on 300-500g of termite ants. This is different from the free pangolin demo at Chitengo which lasts 30 min max.
* Luxury camp guests are given first dibs to hold cook out or sundowners at Lion House or special scenic spots around the park. And when this happens, all the lesser mortals aren't allowed in the vicinity to observe game, which is frankly ridiculous.
There are other juicy park gossip but I will stop for now
Muzimu Lodge
