dominate the summer skies of the Seto
Inland Sea. The terraced rice fields become a
sea of vibrant green seedlings, swaying with

In recent years, with rising summer
temperatures, locals enjoy swimming in the
sea during the cool early morning hours.
Farmers, meanwhile, spread out the plums
they pickled during the rainy season to dry in
the sun.
Life on Shodoshima has long been shaped
through dialogue with soil, stone, and water,
grounded in the belief that everything carries
a spirit. A symbol of this is Kasaneiwa (the
Stacked Rock), enshrined as the sacred
object of Ose-Ishizuchi Shrine. This massive
stone, once part of the quarry that supplied
the giant rocks for Osaka Castle, rests on
the summit of Osehara. For generations, it
has been revered as a dwelling place of the
divine. Standing before it, one cannot help
but feel a deep sense of nostalgia and the
spiritual essence of Japan.
