点评:We have tasted wine all over the world- Burgundy, Bordeaux, Mosel, Western Cape, Napa etc- but have also been to Michigan (and tasted)before and have a clear- and realistic- expectation of the quality of wines available here (overpriced, underwhelming but often good fun and it’s good to support local enterprise). This is not a review of the wines of Dablon, but the tasting itself.
The owners/ investors have clearly spent large sums on a very impressive tasting room and not put management in place to ensure that the tasting itself is a fun, immersive (learning?!) experience.
Our pourer clearly knew nothing- and I mean nothing- about wine. Not their fault at all- clearly a management issue with training before being sent out to the consumer/ customer.
The tasting started poorly when I asked for a spittoon as I was driving and the pourer did not know what that was- a wine cooler duly arrived for me to use after a discussion with a colleague. It served its purpose I suppose.
Our pourer did not know what grapes were in the wines they served and at that point we more-or-less gave up. The Blanc de Blancs was served completely flat and when I commented on this, the server just looked at me (ignorance, not sullenness) as they appeared to not know it should be sparkling. (Another glass was produced later “which should be better- as the bottle was only opened yesterday!”) It was not.
However, their training did extend to asking very promptly at the end of the tasting if I would like a case or just a bottle to take with me. I declined.
The bill arrived with the (now obligatory?) exhortation to tip. It felt like a tax on management incompetence- however I paid with a bitter taste in my mouth (and not just from the Blanc de blancs).
There are much better options out there (go to the Fenn Valley tasting in Saugatuck for a cheaper and better experience).
