A memorable visit to a beautiful town.

点评：We loved staying in the old town. A week later, I am still reminiscing about the beautiful streets and buildings. I would never dream of holidaying in the summer due to the extreme heat and crowds and it was pleasantly quiet in October but with perfect sight-seeing weather. The old town is a tourist trap as far as restaurant prices go - I'd say it was as expensive as central London so we had a self-catering apartment and did mostly our own cooking but had coffees, pastries and drinks out. Beware of cafes in popular areas such as near the Cathedral. The bar opposite it charged 6 euros for a bottle of beer which would have been 3 in a side street. A very nice piece of fish in breadcrumbs (John Dory, which I've never seen in England) with a side salad and a bottle of mineral water, complimentary bread, cost euros 36 in a small restaurant.
I don't know if hotels are much dearer in the summer, but they were amazing value at the end of the season. We stayed for 4 nights at Palazzo Salapolis, a beautifully restored and modernised 16th century palace, in the centre for Euros 75 a night including an ample buffet breakfast. .It was memorable: 2 bedrooms, kitchen/dining room, monogrammed linen etc. Fabulous! We had a small private roof terrace and there is a large terrace for general use. The host, Scott, has made the place his life's work and was extremely hospitable and helpful.
I was not so struck by the modern part of town, separated by a bridge from the old town. It was quite characterless though it does have supermarkets at least, which are hard to find in the old town. If you need groceries in the centre, there is a small one for local people with reasonable prices down an alley just by the Cathedral.
