点评：We visited Walney Island Nature Reserve on Monday. There are several narrow country lanes leading to it, so you need to bear this in mind when driving there.
It was a gloriously hot day, the sky was blue with fluffy white clouds. Everywhere looked absolutely stunning. The visitor cabin is in a small car park, and the entry fee depends upon whether you're a member of Cumbria Wildlife Trust or not. There are leaflets and exhibits in the cabin, and toilets a few yards around the corner. There is the opportunity to become members of Cumbria Wildlife Trust if you wish.
We were greeted by a sweet young lady, who answered our questions and provided us with maps and binoculars to borrow. Cheap drinks and snacks are available to buy, which came in handy on such a hot day.
We followed the 'red' route to see if we could spot the grey seal colony. The beaches and spit are not permissable to people, but the views across are incredible. There are hides dotted along the way, if you want to stop and watch out for birds.
Our children were fascinated by skeletons of rabbits and stoats that we saw along the way. There were a lot of butterflies flitting about, it was so nice to be submerged in nature with very little disturbance from people.
The lighthouse provided a useful land mark, and there are some benches along the way to just stop and admire the view. After looking through the binoculars with great determination, we spotted a colony of grey seals. They were very far away, but could be spotted going for a dip in the sea.
The flora and fauna are delightful,as are the long reaching views across to Piel Island, Morecambe Bay, Blackpool ( the Tower is visible on a clear day) and areas of Barrow, and the Lake District in the distance, lined with it's magnificent mountains. How long you want to walk for depends upon which route you choose, and how much time you have.
A real gem of a place, well worth a visit.
