点评：We hiked the most direct trail route to Hawksbill Mountain that starts from the northern most trailhead, labeled "Hawksbills Loop Trailhead" on the NPS map. The parking area here is not large. It consists of pull-in stalls right along the roads, on both sides of Skyline Drive. There is another trailhead across from Hawksbill which is served by the other parking area. We arrived at 1230 PM on a Thursday and the parking was nearly full. The trail up to the top is, as others have said, a constant climb with no breaks in the gradient. We hiked with two boys, 11 and 13, and they had no trouble, but not without some grumbling. We took 3 to 4 water breaks during the climb. The trail averages 5 to 6 feet wide and is a mix of packed gravel and rock. It is entirely tree covered until the very top. We saw white tail deer about half-way up and they came pretty close, about 40 feet, and seemed totally unbothered by us. At the top is a stone shelter known as "Byrd's Nest #2", open on one side, with heavy timber framed roof and a picnic table. A few steps away is the overlook. There is enough area of clear rocky overlook for many hikers to sit, take photos, etcetera, as well as a concrete and stone viewing platform, apparently recently restored. The view is excellent and as good as Stony Man. The day was clear and we could see several valleys to the west. Our total hiking time (up and down, not including time spent at the top) was about 1 hour 10 minutes. Overall this was a great hike, and felt like a reasonable workout to get a great view of the valley and ridge region of Virginia.
