We visited Stadion Wankdorf to watch BSC Young Boys v Servette during our weekend in Switzerland and really enjoyed the experience.
Getting into the stadium was surprisingly easy being close to the train station. This felt very different from the much busier match-day experience we’re used to at the Emirates watching The Arsenal.
The only thing that surprised us at security was having our bottle of water taken away. We completely understand that there may be safety rules around bottles, but it would have been nice to have been given the option of pouring the water into a cup or perhaps removing the lid rather than having to throw it away completely. We then needed to buy drinks inside.
The drinks queues were longer, probably around 15 people in each line when we went, but we’d arrived with plenty of time so it wasn’t a problem.
We’d also been looking forward to trying a Swiss bratwurst at the match and bought one for CHF 7.50 to share. This was probably entirely our own mistaken expectation, but we’d somehow built up an image of a more substantial German currywurst-style feast. 😂 What arrived was simply a bratwurst with a separate bread roll and mustard on the side.
There was nothing particularly wrong with it — it just wasn’t the feast we’d managed to create in our heads! 😂 We therefore both bought a döner-and-chips box each, which was much more filling and really hit the spot.
I also loved seeing “Gäub-schwarz üses Härz, mir liebe üsi Stadt” written above the goal — essentially, “Yellow-black is our heart, we love our city.” It was one of those little details that made it feel like we were experiencing a different club, city and football culture rather than simply visiting another stadium.
The match itself couldn’t have given us much more entertainment. Young Boys went 2–0 down, pulled one back before half-time and then Samuel Essende scored twice in the second half to complete a brilliant 3–2 comeback.
We enjoy visiting football grounds when we’re away, so it was really nice to add another team, league and stadium outside the UK to our list of places where we’ve watched a match. We certainly couldn’t have picked a boring game for our first experience of Swiss football!
Easy entry, relaxed atmosphere and a five-goal comeback — a really enjoyable addition to our weekend in Switzerland. We’d happily visit again.
