An exceptional weekend of trad climbing in Glen Nevis with Max

点评：I attended the Mountaineering Scotland Ready to Rock - Learn to Trad Climb 2-day course in Glen Nevis, with Max instructing me and another student.
Max was exceptional, in the lead up to the course, throughout the weekend’s training, and following the course.
Facing slightly ‘Scottish’ weather on the first day, Max cleverly adapted the training to the conditions, delivering theory training and activities in relative shelter, meaning that later that day, and throughout the Sunday, we were able to make the most of the better conditions for climbing.
The other student and I had very different levels of knowledge, skills and experience - additionally, the other student was not from the UK and was learning in a second language. Max’s instructional skill was impressive in these circumstances - tailoring the training to our individual needs, and also taking time to talk through equivalent terminology in other countries, etc. throughout the training, we were both fully engaged, and enjoyed every moment!
Max’s focus on safety, not only our own, but that of other climbers on the crags, gave me a real sense of comfort, throughout the weekend. His approach in this regard was fantastic - not overbearing, rather anticipatory, questioning, and appropriately light-hearted “are you sure you want to do that?”.
Max was also fantastic in letting us commiunicate our own goals for the weekend, and working to achieve those, in addition to the course syllabus - I was grateful for the opportunity to lead (with coaching), and to try some harder pitches.
Finally, aside from the coaching, Max communicated with us well before the course, adapting meeting points to meet our needs; he also took some great photos and videos - both of us climbing, and of rope / anchor setups, etc.
Overall, a truly exceptional weekend, which has given me the bug for trad climbing! Improvers’ course next, perhaps!
