点评：A very different experience this year
We have been attending the annual Saltaire Beer Festival for quite a few years now, usually with colleagues and some of our clients, and unfortunately this year's event was noticeably different from previous years.
The festival has always been something we looked forward to, but this year many of the little things that made it special seemed to have disappeared. There was no souvenir glass, no beer tokens and no menu listing the beers and information about them.
When I asked a member of staff about the missing glasses, I was told that over 1,000 tickets had been sold over the weekend and that it was the council's decision not to allow glasses. If that's the case, then perhaps the organisers could explain this more clearly to visitors.
We were also disappointed by the lack of beer knowledge from some of the staff. At a beer festival, you would expect the people serving the beer to know something about the different brews, their styles and what customers might expect from them. Instead, it often seemed to be a case of simply trying a beer and seeing whether you liked it, rather than being able to get any useful information about what you were drinking.
The removal of the downstairs pumps was another noticeable change. This resulted in very long queues for drinks, particularly at busy times, and the queues for the toilets weren't much better.
Food was also a problem. There seemed to be less choice than in previous years and, by around 7:30pm, both food outlets had already run out. At a beer festival, where people are likely to be there for several hours, running out of food that early is disappointing.
The entertainment was another change. Previously there has been a good variety of bands, whereas this year it was a singer followed by a DJ. Again, there is nothing necessarily wrong with either, but it added to the feeling that the festival had lost some of the variety and atmosphere it used to have.
We also noticed a large number of dogs, including dogs on seats and tables, as well as quite a few children attending. Perhaps this is now part of the festival's policy, but it certainly contributed to a different atmosphere from previous years.
Overall, we left wondering what has changed. Has there been a change of ownership or management? Are the changes due to the increased ticket numbers? Or are costs being reduced in certain areas? We simply don't know.
This isn't a criticism of the individual staff, many of whom were friendly and doing their best. It's more about the overall organisation and the experience being offered.
We have supported this festival for years and genuinely want to see it continue to be successful. There were still some good beers, and we enjoyed catching up with colleagues, clients and familiar faces. However, compared with previous years, this year's festival felt like a significant step away from what made it special.
Hopefully the organisers will listen to feedback from regular visitors and bring back some of the character, variety and attention to detail that we've enjoyed in previous years.
