点评:We started planning our trip to the Yucatan by reading travel guides, which helped us figure out in a general way where we we wanted to go. But we were nervous about traveling in Mexico by ourselves. Google provided us with the perfect solution—EcoTourismo Yucatan. We were looking for a tour that combined nature and Mayan ruins, with a minimum of exposure to the peninsula’s tourist meccas, and that’s exactly what we got. For the first three days Alfonso Escobedo shared his deep personal knowledge of Mayan culture, gleaned from his own experiences with archeologists from age 16 and his continuing education over a lifetime in Mayan glyphs, sites, language, and research. For the next part of our trip, he handed over leadership to his son, Riaz, an independent guide, who, over eight days, shared with us his knowledge of the multiple histories that have created Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula today: the precolonial Mayans, the colonial period and the Caste War, the Mexican revolution, and modern Mayan history, and contemporary Mexican politics. A couple of special touches: Riaz stopped at a huge fruit stand and urged us to buy a variety of tropical fruit that we would eat with our breakfasts for the next few days; also, when I asked about what the meaning was of the turtles we saw decorating a Mayan building, he returned the next day with a complete answer, having listened to a recording he had about turtles from a Mayan conference he had attended; he took us for lunch at the restaurant at the Uxmal site, where thee freshly cooked tortilla chips were the best I ever tasted; and finally Riaz had put together an amazing online collection of photos and maps he used as a reference for himself and for us. The love that both father and son have for their work, and their total professionalism and devotion to fulfilling our needs were such a special gift—we only wish we lived closer to them because saying goodbye was difficult.
