Spanning three counties in central Florida, south miles south of Ocala and 45 miles northwest of Orlando, it is census-designated place that covers 33.95 square miles and boasts a population of 80,000. If you love to play golf, this is heaven. Retirees -- the median age is 73.2 years with the largest veteran population in the United States that does not have a military base -- enjoy 56 golf courses, including a dozen country club championship layouts, and can learn the game at four golf academies, one operated by The Villages resident and former LPGA star Nancy Lopez, and two practice centers.
